Commercial Printing Manual: Thermal Pouches, ID Specs, & Biometric Standards
Professional document finishing in cyber cafes, photo printing studios, and customer service kiosks requires precise paper selection, accurate hardware margins, and strict alignment with ISO card dimensions.
1. Standard ID Card Dimensions & Thermal Pouch Sizing
To eliminate air bubbles and edge detachment during hot pouch lamination, printed cards must match the physical pocket boundaries:
- Open Lamination Pouch (17.5 × 5.8 cm): Fits standard thermal lamination pouches (70 × 100 mm / 65 × 95 mm). Front and back sides join horizontally with an exact center fold perforation line.
- Single CR-80 PVC Card (8.5 × 5.4 cm): Conforms to ISO/IEC 7810 standard dimensions for plastic ID cards, employee badges, and driving licenses.
- 4×6 Photo Paper Up/Down Inverted Layout: Designed for duplex thermal or inkjet printing on 4×6 photo paper (101.6 × 152.4 mm). The back side prints directly below the front side rotated 180° so that flipping the printed sheet end-over-end aligns the front and back perfectly.
2. Biometric Passport Sizing Matrix & Background Guidelines
Biometric photo submissions for visas, passports, and civil services must adhere to ICAO 9303 specifications:
- Standard Dimensions: 3.2 × 4.0 cm (India standard) and 3.5 × 4.5 cm (International visa standard).
- Aspect Ratio Retention: Never stretch facial features horizontally or vertically. In our studio, the "Contain / Full (No Crop)" mode preserves the original camera sensor aspect ratio while rendering onto 300 DPI matrices.
- 0.5 cm Hardware Print Margins: Desktop inkjet printers require at least 5 mm (0.5 cm) of unprinted border to prevent roller ink smudging and paper edge curl.
3. Recommended Paper Stock & Temperature Settings
- Lamination Pouches: 125 Micron to 250 Micron pouches require a laminator heating temperature between 110°C and 130°C.
- Glossy Photo Paper: 180 GSM to 240 GSM cast-coated photo paper provides optimal micro-ink droplet absorption for 300 to 600 DPI print heads.
